Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer

After a prolonged research and development, Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Elite is the latest innovation in Orbitrap technology from the world’s largest science serving organization, Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.

It is a high field mass spectrometer, which is ideal for dual pressure ion trap technology, multiple fragmentation technologies (optional ETD, CID and HCD), exploring complicated problems like metabolism, proteomics, lipidomics applications and resolving power more than 240000 FWHM.

Its minimum resolving power is also not very low, which is 15000 FWHM. Such a high resolving power was earlier available on a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR).

The technologies provide better option for signal processing, geometry for mass analyzing and ion-transfer optics. Owing to this better ion-transfer, transmission of ion beam has also improved leading to an improved current pre-amplifier.

Coupling up with other technologies like Velos Pro ion trap technology, this spectrometer offers better options like quick and high scanning speed of 66000 Da/sec, linear detection in electronics neutral-blocking front-end ion trap technology.

Determining the weight of the molecules of proteins and ultra high thorough analysis of isobaric-labelled peptides is much easier now because of this device. Its mass accuracy is also too good with 3 ppm (RMS) using external calibration and using internal calibration, it is 1 ppm (RMS).

The sensitivity and high resolution of this device allows you to determine the perfect location of post-translation modifications (PTM) and mutations. The most conjugate PTMs like glycans can be accessed with the help of this.

In the field of lipidomics, metabolomics and metabolism, this high quality spectrometer provides MSn spectra and HCD with rich structural data. Besides, it has parallel MSn and MS analyzing facilities.
