Caring for baby skin: Top ways to handle your bundle of joy with care

Caring for baby skin is very important. It is thinner and more fragile than adult. The baby is very sensitive. the ability to produce melanin is less. Hence the baby cannot ward off harsh effects from sun. the baby’s body is less resistant to bacteria and other harmful substances in the environment when it is irritated.

The ability to sweat is less in babies. This is also the reason that they are unable to maintain inner body temperature. Babies are also less efficient when it comes to reaching with allergens.

Understand that in the first few weeks after birth, your baby will retain some of the hormones from the mother. This usually results in many minor skin conditions. These will disappear within a few weeks of time.

Here is a list of some of the most common skin conditions developed by a new born baby.

Heat rash:


These are very small pink pimples developed across the body. This condition is developed due to high heat and humidity. This can also result from sweat glands that have not been developed properly.

It is not advisable to over dress your baby. Strictly avoid keeping him/ her in an overheated room. The clothing should be kept loose. You should also focus on cleansing dry skin as far as possible.

Cradle cap:


These are crusty patches developed on the scalp of a baby. This is because of a baby’s overactive glands on the scalp. You can wipe the scalp gently with baby oil leave this on for a few minutes shampoo baby’s hair with a baby shampoo and then use a soft baby brush to comb hair.

Infant acne:

These are pink spots on the face. An infant has a tendency to retain some hormones of the mother for a short span of time. This can trigger infant acne. This goes away on its own with a few weeks of the child’s birth.

Eczema: 


This is when a baby suffers from red, scaly, imitating skin. This is usually determined as a common conditions among infants.

You need to clean and dry skin thoroughly. It is also important to speak to a pacdiatristian or health care professional to get hold of this problem.

It is also advisable to use baby friendly products after consulting a medical practitioner.

Chafing:

This condition develops due to the friction between skin and clothing of the baby. Try minimizing or removing anything that rubs against the skin of the baby or tightens it.

Make sure you cleanse the skin thoroughly, rinse and dry it. Apply a little baby powder, cream or lotion.
