Pilates: For Fitness At Fifty

Pilates is a form of exercise that people of all age groups can try. This form of exercise does not have any side effects and is suitable for everyone, especially the older population.

Advantages of Pilates:

Generally, as people grow old, they tend to lose their muscle tone, thereby increasing the risk of injuries during a stressful exercise regime. Conventional forms of exercises can also lead to injuries due to overstrain and can leave one feeling drained and exhausted.

As one ages, lack of exercising can lead to weight related problems. People suffering from diseases like insomnia, osteoporosis and poor blood circulation can also find it difficult to pursue conventional forms of exercising to maintain their fitness levels.

Pilates is especially suitable for such people as it is a safer form of working out and has no side effects. Its gentle nature does not put any kind of strain on the heart and lungs, and as a result reduces one’s exhaustion after a stringent exercise routine.

It is also safe for the older people as it allows you to exercise in your own pace. It slowly builds up their stamina and increases their strength and flexibility.

Pilates energizes you, thus allowing you to enjoy your life to the fullest. It mainly aims at improving abdominal, pelvic, and back strength, which results in improved body tone and posture.

Experts say that involuntary body functions like bowel movements, digestion, and breathing benefits from this.

Different breathing techniques, which are a part of Pilates, increase oxygen levels in the blood. As a result, you feel refreshed and energized after a session of Pilates.

Effect against Osteoporosis and Arthritis:

Pilates helps to improve your blood circulation and is effective against joint pains and inflammations. It improves your flexibility and reduces muscle tension.

Since Pilates facilitate circulation of blood, it also has a few more benefits like bone density improvement etc.

Even if you are not suffering from osteoporosis, you can try this out in order to beat the chances of developing osteoporosis later in your life.

Most of you tend to feel isolated after you have crossed 50. You can make friends with a number of people who have a similar mindset by joining these groups and practicing Pilates.

How long can I carry on with Pilates:

Since Pilates is not just about fancy moves. This allows anyone to practice Pilates provided that your body is in motion. It is never too late to begin this program.

It is the adaptability as well as modifiability of Pilates that makes this exercise workable to all regardless of their age and level of fitness.

Pilates, nowadays, are attracting a large number of senior citizens. Furthermore, it is fast becoming a trend among senior citizens.

What shall I wear:

You can be dressed in anything while going out for a Pilates workout. However, you should not wear anything baggy.

Always wear something that would allow you to move comfortably. Most of the studios are known for their own fashion vibes.

Although most of the studios allow casuals, you can check out a few studios in order to find one that suits your style.

You can also pay a visit to other studios and have a look at the outfits others are wearing. You need not sign up in the studio just to have a sneak peak.

Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates exercise died at 87. Even at 87, he was extremely healthy and had an active life till his death.

This information probably would convince you to accept the fact that Pilates can be practiced in all ages and at all levels of fitness. You can, of course, speak to your doctor in case you have any doubts.
