Losing Weight with Grapefruit Diet

The Grapefruit Diet originated in the year 1930 and was introduced by Dr. Kelly D. Brownell. It was intended to jumpstart the weight loss programs so that the people on diet can lose a considerable amount of weight in a very short period.

Although there are many versions of the grapefruit diet, the basic idea behind them all is same – eating half a grapefruit prior to every meal so that it helps in burning the enzymes. This diet plan helps you to lose about 10 pounds in a matter of just 12 days, and that too with you enjoying all your meals!

How does it work?




Grapefruit is the main ingredient of the grapefruit diet plan. It contains simple carbohydrates and is high on fiber and Vitamin C. It has absolutely no fat and meager amounts of sodium and calories. It is believed that grapefruit helps in losing weight by curbing the appetite.

Researchers have confirmed that people can lose weight simply by having grapefruit or grapefruit juice before every meal.

The Grapefruit diet results in fast weight loss because of loss of fluids in the body. It is known to contain a special enzyme, which aids in burning fat. Some studies suggest that this diet checks the insulin level in the people thereby reducing their weight.

The grapefruit diet is low on calories and carbohydrates and significantly high on proteins. These proteins along with the grapefruit trigger the fat burning components resulting in quick weight loss.

A typical 7-Day Grapefruit Diet

This type of a diet is very healthy and full of all the essential nutrients. It gives you a lot of energy. The thumb rule is not to eat anything after 7p.m.

Day 1

Breakfast: Grapefruit or its juice (without sugar), two slices of ham, black tea/coffee
Lunch: Vegetable and grapefruit salad mixed with some lemon juice (portion – 250g), black tea or coffee

Dinner: boiled or grilled meat (portion – 150g), green salad along with lemon juice, tea with a spoonful of honey

Day 2

Breakfast: Grapefruit or its juice (without sugar), two eggs (not fried), black tea/coffee
Lunch: Grapefruit and 50g cheese with 20-30% fat
Dinner: 200g grilled fish, green salad with a teaspoon of olive oil and lemon juice, a slice of black bread.

Day 3

Breakfast: Grapefruit or its juice (without sugar), two spoons muesli or oatmeal with a teaspoon of raisins, a teaspoon of nuts (not peanuts) with yoghurt or skimmed milk
Lunch: Grapefruit, one-cup vegetable soup along with two crackers
Dinner: Half a grapefruit (before going off to sleep), 200g chicken – either grilled or boiled, two roasted tomatoes, a cup of tea

Day 4

Breakfast: one glass tomato juice, lemon tea, boiled egg
Lunch: Grapefruit, salad made of green vegetables (pepper, celery, broccoli, cucumber etc.) or carrots, a slice of bread or toast
Dinner: Half a grapefruit or grapefruit juice (before going off to sleep), sweetened or boiled vegetables – beets, cabbage, carrots, celery (no corn or potato) - 400g, tea

Day 5


Breakfast: Fruit salad, tea/coffee with lemon
Lunch: Large boiled potatoes with a salad made of cabbage or any other green vegetable – 200g
Dinner: Fish (250g) or chicken (250g) or beefsteak (200g), tomato juice or baked tomato, half a grapefruit or grapefruit juice (before going off to sleep)

Day 6 and Day 7





Choose any of the days mentioned above.
You can have oranges or apples anytime you feel hungry in between the meals. You can have tea with honey once a day but coffee has to be fresh or espresso.
