Switch TO the Low Sodium Diet For Healthy Living

Amongst the different types of diet plans that are increasingly being adopted by dieters, one of the most unique diet programmes revolves around low consumption of sodium.

From the moment you resolve to go on a low sodium diet, experts will advice you to stay away from foods that contain salt.

Many of the sodium diets require you to have 1000-2000 mg of sodium on a daily basis. For this, you will have to bring about a lot of changes in your eating habits.

Nutritionists are of the view that a healthy person should consume 2400 mg of sodium on a daily basis.

So, if you are determined to follow the low sodium diet programme, then keep the following points in mind:

1. Remove the salt shaker from the table: People are in the habit of using the salt shaker anytime they find that there is not enough salt in the dish. Hence, it is advisable to remove the salt shaker from the table.

2. Don't put salt in while cooking: We don’t realize but many a times while cooking, we tend to use more salt and exceed the daily intake limit of sodium.

3. Use a substitute of Salt: You can look for options that will allow you to replace salt and make use of it. Therefore, you can use light salts which are essentially a combination of salt and potassium chloride.

If you take up the low sodium diet, you will notice that you will be forced to give up on many snack items. This is because they contain high amounts of salt. You can consider the following snack items, if you are keen on following the low sodium diet.

Vegetables: Raw and fresh vegetables are good for your heart. They are very nutritious and contain low amount of calories and fat. Vegetables also contain a lot of fiber. Hence, you can have snacks made from vegetables. You can also consume a lot of celery, carrots, broccoli, radish and cauliflower.

Fruits: You can also have some fruit based snack. They contain low level of sodium and fat. They are highly nutritious and rich in fiber. You can relish fruit based crunches that are made from apple, grapes, orange among others.

Snacks containing Low Sodium: If you are really fond of snack, then you can look for unsalted potato wafers, corn chips and popcorn that do not contain much of salt.

Taro root wafers and chips made from banana are again good options. However, avoid any snack that contains trans fat and hydrogenated oil. They are not at all healthy for your heart.

You must also look for seasonings that do contain only light salt. Some of the seasonings that you can consider include spices, herbs, black pepper, fresh chili peppers, minced bell peppers, hot sauce and fresh lemon juice among others.

Conclusion: if you end up consuming salt in excess quantity on a daily basis, then it will cause more harm to your body. Your heart, kidney and other parts of the body will have to put in extra effort to function properly.

In order to avoid such a situation, you can easily switch to a low sodium diet. It is not very difficult to follow it, and the results are exceptionally good as well.
