GETTING TO KNOW ABOUT GUMMY BEARS IMPLANTS

Getting to know about gummy bears implants

Gummy bear implants are breast implants which contain a highly cohesive, semi-solid silicone gel. This is surrounded by strong and thick outer silicone shell with multi layers.

These silicone gel based breast implants are also called gummy bear breast implants, high strength gel implants or cohesive gel implants.

They are however, still not been approved by the FDA for use in America. But they are used in several countries since 1995. The clinical trials in U.S. began from 2004 with the data being evaluated by FDA for the implants manufactured by two companies, Allergan and Mentor.

There is a vast difference between the traditional silicone breast implants and these in that the consistency of material acting as the filler is very thick.

The consistency makes it remain intact and shape retaining, even when it is cut, just like gummy bears which have resulted in the name. All the properties combined with a very strong outer coating makes the chances of gel bleed minimal.

These implants can be got only in a tear drop shape, making the bottom fuller than the top. Hence the need for the implants not moving around the inside of the body as any shift in the position may lead to an odd appearance.

In order to make sure that the implants stay secure in their respective places, there is a textured surface on the outer shell which encourages better adherence of tissue.

Although it is said that should be a lower danger of silicone leakage as well as migration, there are no reports or direct proof of it being so until the review of the findings of 10 years after the implantations has been done.

Advantages

These gummy bear implants have a wonderful consistency which many consider to bare closer resemblance to breast tissue as compared to saline breast implants.

These implants preserve their forms and bounce back into their original shapes even after any movement or manipulation.

This results in lesser chances of the folding or rippling of the shell, which is a very important characteristic, as these two actions are the main reasons for the rupture of implants.

These implants result in much lesser chances of capsular contracture, which is a very common complication post surgery. This may be the result of the combination of the textured external shell and cohesive material.

Even in cases of rupture of the implants there will supposedly be no leakage and possible migration to other body parts. They will stay in place and retain the integrity and shape.

Disadvantages

The most evident disadvantage of using these implants is that they do not have any track record or follow up data to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of their usage.

Due to the fact that they are less flexible and more solid, it is necessary that a larger incision be made. Thus, certain options of incision placement have to be discarded like the approach through the belly button.

The incision involving the peri-areolar part can only work for those patients that have large areolas.

It proves to be a technically difficult endeavor as well in case of the transaxillary approach. The most common approach for the insertion of these gummy bear implants is the inframammary one.

It is very essential to select the right kind of surgeon as it a far more complicated process than normal breast augmentation surgeries.

Some patients also feel that they are less natural and slightly firmer than conventional silicone implants.
What to do in case of a rupture

There is no solid proof of what to do in case of rupture due to a lack of data.

Where to get them?

Although there are unavailable in the U.S., they can be got in a few European countries.
