Stephen Huber and Michael Zollner are the two graduates from Universitat Konstanz located in Germany. They have developed an innovative way of giving artificial eyesight to the blind with the help of Kinect, which has been named NAVI.

The system, Navigational Aids for the Visually Impaired, is simple and homemade. A Microsoft Kinect camera, AR-Toolkit markers, and a vibrotactile waist belt are used to improve indoor navigation for people having visionary problems.

Another major innovation is Kinect Mirror, developed by Tobias Blum from Technical University of Munich. The mirror reflects an augmented image of the internal structure of the patient’s body and the skeletal parts can be analyzed with the help of 3D imaging using a Kinect device.

During complicated surgeries, Kinect and a software based Da Vinci robot help to manipulate surgical tools very precisely.

Fredrik Ryden from the University of Washington has programmed Microsoft Kinect in a new way to create a virtual environment of performing surgeries in a safer mode.
