Nook WiFi by Barnes and Noble

These days, readers for printed books are hard to find and book sellers and publishers are searching for alternative avenues so that they can get more potential customers. The concept of e-books is fast becoming highly fashionable.

Those who use these devices can read books and can also stay in contact with the e-world through Wi-Fi. Barnes and Nobles, America’s largest book retailer had entered the market for e-books with their electronic book device in 2009.

The original e-reader of Barnes and Nobles, Nook has been revamped so that readers can download more than 2 million books.

The touch screen Nook is out to try to recapture the market. The weight of the Nook is less than any paperback book. The battery life of the Nook is at 2 months. The Nook is poised to give a stiff competition to the Apple iPad or Amazon Kindle.

The Nook fits in the palm of the hand quite nicely and stands at a thickness of 0.47 inches. The reader boasts of a concave back and an indentation which is perfect for gripping.

The reader is 6.5 x 5 inches and is much smaller than Kindle. The reader has six buttons in total.

The built-in storage space of the Nook is 2GB is half of that of Kindle and double of that of Kobo. There is a microSD card slot, enabling you to expand the memory space by 32 GB. You can highlight certain passages, adjust the size of the font and look up words with the help of the Nook.

The reader is run on an 800MHz TIOMAP 3 processor, which is far more efficient than the 532MHz Freescale i.MX353 the Kindle has.

The movement of page turning, start up and PDF viewing are quite fast and efficient. The version of Nook is only available with WiFi.

Pearl E Ink has been introduced and has been considered as a huge leap over the first generation reader. The rate of page turn of the Nook beats the third generation Kindle quite noticeably.

The clarity for white and black text and highly contrasting images give good views for magazines and comics. In fact, you have to refresh for every half-dozen pages in the reader.

The infrared touch experience Neonode's zForce is a major update and addition. The reading interface is touch screen which blurs the difference between using an old fashioned book and an e-reader.

Simply drag a finger diagonally across the screen to advance the pages and to go back simply swipe in the opposite way.

A physical keyboard is absent and the gadget weighs 7.5 ounces with a price of $139. You can get hold of the reader from 10th June onwards.
