Abhyanga Massage - The Relaxing Daily Oil Massage

Abhyanga massage is a common type of massage therapy. It is commonly used by Ayurveda practitioners. This is also a kind of treatment wherein the client is liberally covered in oil. The practitioner rubs the oil gently with smooth, gentle movements deep into the body.

The massage is highly recommended by Ayurvedic practitioners as it helps in keeping the body balanced and healthy. Thre are many schools in India that offer certification courses in abhyanga massage. Some of the Western massage schools also offer short term courses for abhyanga techniques.

Abhyanga massage should be done during the daytime. This facilitates the body to stay rejuvenated. The client is made to lie flat preferably on a table. This massage must be performed without clothes. Warm oil is liberally poured by the therapist on the client. Coconut oil and sesame oils are the most preferred oils used for the therapy.

The individual to be massaged is made to lie on a special massage table for some time. The body is fully soaked with oil. The massage is given with gentle strokes or movements.

These movements are used in a rhythmic manner. The oil soaked in to the body facilitates improved circulation. It also helps in rejuvenation of the joints.

The oil does not penetrate deep into the body tissues. Abhyaanga massage is also combined with another popular variety of Ayuvedic massage, ‘shirodhara’. This is a kind of healing technique that includes warm and fragrant oil. It is liberally poured on the forehead.

Abhyanga massage also uses warm massage oil. Pressure is applied with palm, hand and fingers. The pressure is light and also given over the heart and abdominal areas. Special focus is given on areas such as palms, fingernails and soles.

These are regions have nerve endings and requires extra attention. After massage, the client is asked to relax for about 15 minutes. This is followed with hot shower. Abhyanga massage should be done 3 times in a week.

The duration of Abhyanga massage ranges to about one hour. A hot shower after the massage facilitates absorption of oil in to the body.

This is very beneficial to the health. Most people are unable to devote adequate time for abhyanga massage due to lack of time.

Hence, massaging hands and feet is the regime that is followed regularly. The oil used for the body is just according to the body type of the individual.

The Abhyanga massage is good for maintaining overall health and also relieves fatigue. It promotes sleep.
