Surgical and Medicinal Treatments for Male Hair Loss

Males in the twentieth century suffer from a typical hair loss problem called male pattern hair loss. In medical terms it is called Alopecia. It is quite a common problem. But fortunately, like any other physical problem, it can be treated successfully.

You can find costly as well as cheap treatment options against hair loss. Consider your affordability and comparative effectiveness of the treatments before you choose one. The type of problem often dictates the type of treatment needed.

Medical treatments for hair loss can be of two types - surgical and medicinal. The former range constitutes of EXT, hair weaving, hair transplantation, etc. EXT speeds up the growth of hair follicles. Hair weaving is a bio-matrix process in which external hair is woven into existing hair.

In this way, the length of original hair gets increased and the bald area is covered.

The hair is adhered to the scalp with the help of silicone adhesives, sutures or clips to the existing hair. The plus point of this procedure is that it is a painless and fast process, and you can get great density of hair quickly.

The cost incurred in this process is low. However, just don’t go for it as it costs less. For this kind of process you have to go to the salon often to re-fix your hair every time. Thus, you actually build up your cost over time. Also, you will not be able to go out during heavy rainfall or strong winds.

You cannot perform any sport requiring physical exertion or physical contact, so you cannot air dive or swim. In addition, fatal allergies can occur because of the adhesives and hair may get loose because of the constant traction of the clips.

In the process of hair transplantation, hair from one area having a good amount of hair is picked and relocated into the hair follicles of the bald area. This surgery is done under local anesthesia and does not cause much discomfort.

The implanted hair hardly requires maintenance, can grow till any length and rarely falls. There aren’t many precautions that are to be taken post surgery.

You can repeat this process up to three times, leaving a gap of six months in between. Nevertheless, hair transplant takes six months in order to show its full effects because the hair needs to go through a natural period, although density like the hair present in younger age groups cannot be guaranteed.

Medicinal treatments include prescribing medicines as a remedy for hair loss. They include regaine and propecia. The former regulates the blood flow to the scalp and stimulates the hair to develop faster. The latter balances DHT, which has a big role to play in bringing baldness.

Steroid injections are also recommended as a treatment for hair loss. They are painful and should be taken only in small doses.

They are to be repeated after every four to six weeks. One can also take oral steroids. However, the symptoms of their side effects are more severe.

Tropical steroids are used to massage the scalp. The combination of steroid injections and drugs like anthralin and minoxidil also work out up to a great extent and hasten up the process of hair growth. The side effects of this treatment include scalp irritation, headaches, vomiting, and nausea.

Whichever medical treatment you opt for, please consult your doctor before you go in for it. The injections must be administrated by a licensed physician. And remember - keep steroids as your last resort.
