Feng Shui - My Home Office: How to take a Feng Shui Compass Reading

A Feng Shui compass is also known as Lo-Pan, which means a bowl containing everything (or the mysteries of the universe), and it helps in the determining the home’s bagua so that a deep feng shui information of the building or the site can be found out.

The reading will help you determine the unfavorable or favorable areas of feng shui. It is very important to find out this fact as some specific areas are connected to the particular areas of a person’s life.

There are many rings in a professional feng shui compass. Each ring goes deeper and deeper inside the connection that people experience with their working or living space.

But you won’t require a professional compass if you want to take the reading yourself.

All you would need is an accurate compass, a pen, and a piece of paper. You can then follow the below mentioned instructions to get the reading.

The first step is to determine the direction in which the building is facing. The side face of the building has the horizon’s expansive view, and is most likely the side where the street or the entry point of the building or the main door is located. The best way to determine is to draw a sketch of your home and then look and decide.

The compass used should be of excellent quality and all of the 360 degrees should be very clearly marked so the exact degree of the facing location of the building can be determined.

Another point to note is that there should be a line of sight in the compass which can allow the lining up of your compass with the measuring object.

Chinese compasses and western compasses are mainly used. A Chinese one is also known as a Luopna, and the flat edge of it helps in the alignment with the flat edge of the building.

A western one is like a Suunto and can be with or without any flat edge.

Both you and your compass must be in a perfect position for the reading. It is best to avoid any magnetic interference so as to get an accurate reading.

You should not stand near any cars, electrical equipment, cell phones and parking meters. You should not have any metallic elements on you like belts, chains and watches.

While taking the measurement, position yourself facing the building, with the body squared and both feet even and placed a little apart to get stability.

The perfect reading may require you to lean over the compass. Facing the building is important as the parallel position of the building can be determined only while facing it.

You should now stand in the center of the building’s facing side. Stand at a distance of 5-10 feet away from your home.

You and your compass should be parallel with the building’s face. It is very important to ensure that you obtain an accurate reading.

The compass should be held at the waist and level to the ground.

The best way to ensure that you get an accurate and verified reading is to take 3 different readings. The first reading should be from outside the building.

The second one should be taken from inside the home but still looking at the same direction. The third one should be taken from further inside of the house but still looking at the same direction.

With the three or even more readings if you want, you will be able to get an accurate reading by finding the median number.
