Vegan Diet and Weight Loss

Most people want to know about whether vegetarian diet can help them lose weight. This is true to a certain extent because vegan diet consists of less amount of fat in all. It also contains lower amount of saturated fat and cholesterol.

The best part is that the diet includes good amount of dietary fiber. Follow a vegetarian diet means that one needs to indulge in unlimited servings of vegetables, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and a lot of other healthier options. The diet is helpful making people lose more weight without making them feel hungry.

What is a Vegetarian Diet?

Vegetarians do not eat any chicken, meat, or fish. Vegetarian diets consist mainly of plant-based food items such as healthy fruits, whole grains, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and seeds.



Vegetarians can be easily categorized into various groups.

The categorization is usually defined by the types of foods they eat. Here is a list of category vegetarians are usually grouped in:

* Lacto-ovo vegetarians:

They completely leave out red meat, poultry and fish. However, they do not have any problem in having animal products such as eggs, milk and other products made from milk including yogurt and cheese.

* Lacto-vegetarians:


They drink milk and all kinds of products. They can also have plant-based foods easily. However, they do not include meat, eggs, fish, meat and poultry in their diet.

Pure vegans are supposed to remove all types of foods from animals. These include poultry, meat, fish, eggs, milk, and cheese. They emphasize on eating only plant-based foods. Diet experts recommend healthy alternatives to eggs and dairy products to vegans.

This is a way to save them from nutritional deficiencies. There are many suggestions for alternatives to eggs and animal products for vegans.

Here is a choice of alternatives they can choose from:

* Soymilk, almond milk or rice milk are excellent option in this regard. These are great and nutritional replacements of cow’s milk.

* If you are against using butter, then you can choose water wine or vegetable broth while sautéing. A nonfat cooking spray will also serve your purpose well. If you are going for baked goods, canola oil is a wonderful option.

* Using soy cheese is a great idea instead of cheese. You may even go for nutritional yeast flakes. These are readily available in most of the health food stores.

* If you do not use eggs in baked goods, it would be good to go for commercial egg replacers. This is actually a dry product crafted out of potato starch.

Another option is to use one tablespoon milled flaxseed in conjunction with three tablespoons of water. This is a great replacement for egg. Tofu is also a good replacement for omelets.




* Avoid fried foods if you are trying to lose a lot of weight. This means that you can spread fats thinly on a slice of bread. Replacing high fat snacks with raw vegetables or fresh fruit will also be good.
