SKIN CARE DURING PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

Pregnancy is a period when the entire body is exposed to hormonal changes that affect inevitably the mood and creates chemical imbalances.


These are also translated into cutaneous affections present on skin.
Before using a cosmetic product or a medication which contains ingredients about you don't have much information, it is very important to verify if this can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.



Here are the main components from cosmetic products that are supposed to affect mother's and child's health:

Anti-acne products

Scrubs
are used for treating different skin problems, including the acne - a frequent problem at pregnant women.

This is found in numerous products such as tonics and makeup removals lotions.



Cosmetics with BHA
can penetrate the skin in her depth and to clean the dead cells, reduce the inflammation, while the ones with AHA can only clean superficially the skin.

Both categories can be used with no restrictions in the following concentrations: BHA - maximum 2% and AHA - maximum 12 %.

Peelings
with any kind of acids and laser can't be used during pregnancy.

There are no studies to prove that the IPL procedures are harmful, but doctors recommend avoiding this type of treatments during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Still, the metronidazole (recommended by doctors for Rosacea) can be used.

Anti-ageing cosmetics


The retinoid is a strong substance which is found in anti-ageing creams and lotions because of its proprieties of reducing wrinkles and improving skin's tonus.
They are a derivative of vitamin A which accelerates the cellular division and prevents the collagen break from skin's structure.


They are present under different names:

Differin (adapelene), Retin-A, Renova (tretinoin), Retinoic Acid, Retinyl linoleate, Retinyl palmitate, Tazorac and avage (Tazarotene).


Botanic ingredients


Many mommies don't give importance to ingredients like soy, considering it a botanic ingredient.
Still, these can also have harmful consequences for skin.

On the labels we will find them under names like Lethicin, Phosphatidylcholine, Soy, Textured vegetable protein (TVP).


Synthetic derivatives


Some cosmetic products contain talcum, derivatives of it, synthetic colors, flavors, perfumes, glycol propylene and others, such as parabens.


Try to avoid these toxic ingredients as much as you can during pregnancy or try not to abuse by the products which contain them.


Cosmetic products for care

If you breastfeed, avoid using for breasts cosmetic products that contain triclosan (a frequent ingredient in liquid soaps composition) because it can affect the hormones and thyroid of your baby.


The antibacterial can be applied during pregnancy and breastfeeding, at your doctor's recommendation.


Benzoyl Peroxide can be used in concentrations of 5% or less and azelaic acid in 15% and 20%.


Dioxane is a substance contained of SLS sulfates
(sodium lauryl sulfate) found in shampoos, soaps and tooth pastes.


These ingredients can affect the thyroid and can provoke infertility, problems of nervous and hormonal system and it is carcinogenic.
Avoid as much as possible these ingredients during pregnancy and, especially, during breastfeeding.


Also, hair dye is dangerous because of the steams breezed during dyeing.

Sun screen products

These can be used with no restrictions. Still, it is preferable to use creams based on titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

The products used during pregnancy must contain ingredients that assure nutrients and lots of hydration and elasticity.

Avoid noxious ingredients and try to adopt permanently these changes for a healthier lifestyle.
