Tipping the salon owner – should you or shouldn’t?

Tipping is a way by which you can show your appreciation for the work done by your hair stylist. If your stylist has given you an outstanding hair cut or extraordinary services, then you should tip him or her generously.

By doing this, you will become a preferred client of the salon. You will get much better services. You will be given first priority while giving appointment. In older days, tipping the owner of the salon was not in fashion.

It was previously thought that the hair stylist giving you the hair cut should not be tipped if the person is the owner of the salon.

It was usual for the owner to charge more for the service than any other employed stylist. That used to cut away the requirement of tipping.

Only a heartfelt thank you would have been sufficient. However, now times have changed. It has become a protocol to tip the owner of the salon.

Nowadays, salon owner needs a good amount of money to cover the operating cost of the salon. In addition, he needs to pay a salary and other perks to his staff. Since the services provided by salon owners are equally valuable, they are also eligible to receive a tip from their clients.

Technically, it is said that you should not tip the owner of the salon. Giving a tip or not giving a tip always depends on what the client feels.

However, most of the people are now all for giving tip to salon owners. That is why it has almost become a norm to tip salon owners.

The clients should never feel forced to tip. A tip only acts as a great gesture to show that the work done was great. Such a gesture is always welcome, however not necessary. A tip is not a requirement but rather a token of appreciation.

There is a difference of opinion among salon owners as to whether they should be tipped or not. Some owners think that it should be etiquette to tip the owner.

In the older days, when salons were mainly cash businesses, the owner could fill their pockets with some profit, or, simply charge more for the services than anyone else. But, nowadays, everyone has to charge the same amount.

Moreover, it has become a practice to pay for these services using credit cards. Thus, the salon owners have to maintain a punching machine, give money for a pin pad lease and also give up 3% of the amount charged by Amex or other cards.

This is the reason why tips through credit card are not allowed in most of the salons. The stylist will never receive the full tip; there will always be a deduction of 3% processing fees.

On the other hand, there are some salon owners who will never accept your tip. If such a thing happens, do not push it any more. Just a smile and genuine thanks will show how much you appreciate and value their service.

In order to avoid any sort of confusion, you can ask the receptionist of the salon in advance whether the owner accepts tips or not.

Thus, it is very difficult to understand whether to tip the salon owner or not. You should nevertheless offer it to him. Some good owners often take and then distribute tips between the staff.

You can always offer the tip in a “good luck” gesture.
